Implementation Meeting for FCT Area Council Election Abuja, November 19, 2025

The Electoral Hub Participates in Implementation Meeting for FCT Area Council Election Abuja, November 19, 2025
The Electoral Hub participated in the Implementation Meeting convened by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as preparations intensify for the 2026 FCT Area Council Elections scheduled for February 21, 2026.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from INEC, including Heads of key departments responsible for Voter Education, Publicity, Gender, and Inclusivity programming. Electoral Officers and Assistant Electoral Officers from the six Area Councils of the FCT, as well as representatives of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and Civil Society Organisations working in the area of election, and democracy space.
Highlights of the meeting included discussions on strengthening voter education, publicity strategies, and enhancing media relations to improve public outreach.
Stakeholders also reviewed approaches for deepening gender and inclusivity programming, particularly through grassroots-focused programmes for women and PWDs. The session further outlined timelines, coordination mechanisms, and implementation pathways to support comprehensive voter awareness ahead of the 2026 Area Council Election.
Speaking at the meeting, the Director of The Electoral Hub, Princess Hamman-Obels, highlighted the critical need for more targeted voter engagement within urban areas. She noted that AMAC alone accounts for nearly 50% of registered voters in the FCT yet continues to record low turnout during elections. She emphasised that while rural mobilisation remains essential, voter education efforts must deliberately address urban communities whose electoral behaviour significantly influences overall turnout.
As an organisation committed to promoting electoral knowledge, accountability, inclusion, and integrity, The Electoral Hub remains dedicated to strengthening public confidence in the electoral process. We will continue to advocate for informed participation, promote inclusive access to credible information, and work with stakeholder to provide research-driven insights that uphold the integrity of the 2026 FCT Area Council Election and future elections.
